MIHOYO – HONKAI: STAR RAIL PLAYSTATION 5 CONSOLES
THE PROJECT
Players take on the role of the Trailblazer in 2023’s Honkai: Star Rail, as they work to fix the devastation caused by the Stellaron across various worlds throughout the galaxy. The gacha RPG was developed and published by miHoYo in April 2023.
THE CHALLENGE
Originally a mobile and PC game, Honkai: Star Rail was released for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) in October 2023. TAKEOFF was asked by miHoYo to create four custom PS5 consoles to showcase at gaming conventions across the globe.

TAKEOFF'S SOLUTION
We were honoured to be asked to work on one of the most popular gaming brands, with TAKEOFF’s team of designers immediately delving into the game’s magical story to pinpoint which designs would best complement the brief. We settled on the Astral Express – used to transport players across the galaxy – and a combination of the ancient artefact, the Ambrosial Arbor, and the beautiful (but deadly) Abundant Ebon Deer spiritual beast.
Our Astral Express PS5 was a highly-detailed replica of the Akivili creation’s front. The metre-long design also features large LED lights at the front and a 3D-printed ‘star’ effect throughout the base, as though it were travelling between worlds.
Both the Ambrosial Arbor and Abundant Ebon Deer share a link within Honkai: Star Rail – our second design featured both elements, with the deer’s head at the front of the console and the Arbor’s branches enveloping the rest of the PS5.
Both consoles were playable and received very well at international gaming conventions throughout September and December 2023, with the four consoles alternating between the Tokyo Game Show, New York Comic Con, Brazil Game Show and Seoul’s Anime Game Festival.
