DIRECTIVE 8020 — CUSTOM HARDWARE

THE GAME
Developed by Supermassive Games, Directive 8020 is a sci-fi survival horror following the crew of the Cassiopeia as they wake from hypersleep near the planet Tau Ceti f — only to find something has come aboard with them. Body horror and infection run through the game’s DNA, as the line between crew and contagion blurs.

THE CHALLENGE
Supermassive Games asked us to create standout custom hardware for Directive 8020 that could bring the horror of the game into the physical world ahead of launch — something fans and press would stop scrolling for, and that captured the game’s body-horror tone at a glance.

TAKEOFF'S SOLUTION

We built a custom Xbox console as the centrepiece of the set, paired with matching custom Xbox controllers and a Steam Deck. Using the game’s infection theme as our starting point, we sculpted the horror directly onto the hardware rather than relying on a simple skin or wrap: a scarred, industrial console casing — branded with the Directive 8020 logo and hazard tape — has been overtaken by hand-crafted flesh, spreading across the surface in raw, wound-like growths.

A screaming face melts into the console on one side, dripping down the casing, while a single hand reaches out from the infection on the other. On the reverse, an exposed ribcage and spine push through the console’s shell, as though something inside is trying to break free.

The matching controllers carry the same contamination across their back panels, with the raw growth spreading over the Xbox and Directive 8020 branding, while the Steam Deck features the game’s key art on screen alongside its own infected detailing — a visceral, tactile set that turns the game’s core horror into something fans could hold in their hands.

There are so many ways that creative custom controllers can promote your game to a wider audience and the press. Contact TAKEOFF today to find out more!
